Located at the corner of Westbrook Mall and University Boulevard, UBC Gateway is a Mass Timber educational facility project consisting of classrooms, academic offices, teaching labs, and research laboratories. In addition, the building has four large lecture halls on the ground floor.
UBC Gateway will not only serve as an expression of welcome into the center of the campus, but it will also recognize Musqueam culture and values as it sits on Musqueam traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory. It will help people feel at home on campus by giving them a sense of belonging and well-being. This building will also serve to convey the university's commitment to innovation, sustainability, cutting-edge research, and forward-looking ideas.
The UBC Gateway project benefited from incorporating DELTABEAM® in several ways. It allowed for the adoption of a larger 10.5m x 9m grid spacing, even under the burden of heavy loads. Its high rigidity also meant that the beam met the stringent vibration requirements. Additionally, DELTABEAM®'s integrated fire resistance eliminated the need for spray-on fireproofing protection. As an added advantage, DELTABEAM® was seamlessly installed within the depth of the floor panels.
The project developer is UBC Properties Trust, with Heatherbrea Builders serving as the Construction Manager. Perkins + Will in Vancouver took on the design, while RJC was the structural engineer for the project. VAAGEN TIMBER supplied the Glulam, and the CREE panels were fabricated by Con-Force. KWH Constructors was responsible for the project's erection.
